Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
