What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
