Three Lions Coach Reveals His Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Now, he is focused to assist the England manager win the World Cup next summer. His path from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His roles at clubs included elite sides, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their methods involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system enabling productivity in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in attack and defense – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. During his education for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he sought out tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included convinced and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
