Crawley – 1

Expected for Australian conditions however managed just a rare Ashes pair from an English opener in just a handful of deliveries.

Duckett – Five

Made starts during each knock. His dismissal on Saturday was when things started to fall apart for the English side.

Ollie Pope – 6

Seems better due to adjustments to his technique. Opening match in the series tends to be his best, then it goes downhill. The team require him to build on this.

Root – One

Miles off that first hundred in Australia. The side require the nous from their star performer to have any chance to bounce back from this defeat.

Brook – Five

His half-century in the first innings was skittish, but valuable. Awful choice in the follow-on.

Ben Stokes – Six

Came back after being injured with a five-wicket haul, though looked out of touch with the bat. Lost control while fielding against Head's aggressive batting.

Smith – 4

Could have the skills for Australia, but needs to smarten up. Can expect plenty of short bowling from now on.

Gus Atkinson – 5

Involved in the impressive England first-innings bowling effort and tried to carry the fight with the bat in the second innings. Part of the bowlers that fell apart during the match.

Carse – Five

Similar to above, with added spice of getting taken apart by Travis Head.

Archer – 5

Appeared awesome with the ball in the first innings and was the best among struggling teammates in the second. Could still play a key role in the series.

Wood – Five

Finished without a wicket, yet extremely impressive to just get on the field considering his time away.

Australia Player Ratings

Jake Weatherald – Six

First-timer had tough luck to be exposed against Archer early on, later contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Khawaja – Three

A bizarre match. Appeared fit and had periods off the pitch. Took a couple of important catches at slip, but also seemed immobile in the field. Gets a mark for the injury that allowed Head to bat as opener.

Marnus Labuschagne – Seven

An effective comeback to the side. Absorbed England's bowling pressure more effectively than most initially, and backed up Travis Head later.

Steve Smith – 5

Seemed out of sorts early on. Unnecessary pre-match comments on Monty Panesar.

Head – Nine

Possibly churlish not to get the full 10, however he attempted a rather ropey shot initially. His follow-on hundred proved to be an historic performance.

Cameron Green – 5

Took the crucial wicket of Pope early. Shaken by a Wood short ball when he batted. Barely needed later in the match.

Carey – Five

Tried a counter-attack versus England's bowlers on the first evening. Tidy behind the stumps.

Starc – Nine

Carried the weight of the attack in the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood with the first Aussie Ashes series 10-for for two decades.

Scott Boland – Six

Below his best in the first innings. Got better later to trigger the English batting collapse.

Doggett – 6

Solid first appearance. More than able replacement for Cummins and Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon – 2

Almost an onlooker in a match controlled by fast bowling. Possibly suffered an injury after being hit by Wood.
