The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
