RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
