Greenlandic Women Secure Legal Triumph in Struggle with the Danish State regarding Forced Contraceptive Coil Scandal.

Survivors from a past program in which numerous of Inuit females, some minors were forcibly fitted with contraceptive coils without their knowledge or consent are declaring a win following their legal fight with the Danish government.

It has been confirmed the women will be eligible for financial redress from a settlement package.

Parliamentary Settlement Reached

Folketinget, along with state authorities, reached an agreement that entitles approximately four thousand five hundred Greenlandic women the right to seek kr. 300,000 (around thirty-five thousand pounds) each.

The announcement comes after a lengthy battle by a group of women that initiated legal proceedings seeking compensation for the pain and suffering they experienced, arguing it was a breach of fundamental personal rights.

Colonial Context

Denmark administered Greenland under colonial rule until 1953 and retained control of the island's medical services until 1992.

Earlier this year, after years where it did not address the violations, the government issued a formal expression of regret. The country's leader apologized over the “systemic discrimination” against women and girls within the Danish healthcare system.

“It has had significant impacts for the affected women who suffered both bodily but also psychological harm,” said a senior official.

Compensation Procedure Outlined

The health ministry stated that women subjected to the procedure without their knowledge or consent between 1960 and 1991 would be able to seek compensation starting next year. The law will come into force by mid-year.

Based on results of an impartial investigation into medical procedures from that era, an estimated 4,500 individuals may be eligible for the fund.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Provide a “credible report” of the incident.
  • Have lived on the island throughout the specified timeframe.
  • Declare on oath that they had no knowledge nor gave permission for the procedure.

Voices of Victims

One of the plaintiffs, who was fourteen when she was told to go to the hospital without explanation, described it like an assault.

“Our activism as speakers to the media has been successful,” she said. “We started in 2022 and now a relatively short time we have secured an apology plus financial acknowledgment.”

Another perspective expressed happiness, saying, “We are happy. Like my mother said: we won.” Although there is a view the compensation should have been greater, they expressed relief over the recognition of what happened.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic official described the compensation as “long overdue”. She emphasized, “This isn't primarily financial. It concerns recognition of the injury and its profound implications.”

The relevant health minister acknowledged the scandal represent a “dark chapter in our joint past”, noting while redress “will not erase the pain from the women” yet it “helps to acknowledge and apologise for what they endured.”
