An air surveillance team with the Tampa law enforcement agency spotted the car operating dangerously on a highway at about 12.40am after police said the light-colored car had been seen illegally racing in a different neighborhood, according to a police department statement. The state road police intercepted the car and tried to perform a maneuver that involves striking a back panel of a escaping vehicle to cause it to spin out, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful. State police personnel “disengaged” as the vehicle raced toward the historic downtown district near the city center, Tampa authorities reported. Ultimately, the motorist lost control of the vehicle and struck over a dozen people near the bar, police said. Three individuals died at the scene and a fourth victim died at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was admitted in critical state, and 8 other victims were being cared for at local medical centers but were classified as not critical, police stated. Two other individuals sustained minor harm and refused treatment at the site. Every one of the 15 people are adults. “The incident today was a pointless disaster, we are with the families of the victims and everyone who were affected,” the Tampa top law enforcement officer expressed in a message. Authorities identified the alleged driver as 22-year-old the individual, who was booked on the weekend and is being held at the local detention facility. Legal records indicated the suspect has been accused with 4 counts of reckless driving causing death and four counts of serious fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. All are serious felonies. No attorney was recorded for the accused. “Our entire city is mourning this loss,” said Tampa’s mayor, previously was the city’s first female police chief, in a message on online platforms. “Our condolences are with everyone affected. The investigation into the incident is continuing, and we are working to obtain explanations,” she wrote. In recent years, certain regions and municipal authorities have advocated to restrict the employment of rapid vehicle pursuits to safeguard both the public and officers. After a rise in deaths, a recent report funded by the federal authorities recommended police chases to be minimized, noting that the danger to individuals, officers and bystanders often outweighs the urgent requirement to take someone into custody. However, the state has intensified efforts on the methods, with the region’s highway patrol revising its policies to relax restrictions on the use of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report described these tactics as “dangerous” and “debated”.
