Cameron Norrie earned the biggest win of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's maiden victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in history to defeat a global number one. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualies here. I just tried to embrace my performance in the closing months of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest success of my career, my first win over the top player and likely the most in-form player in the world right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight premier event wins, which marked the best series of outcomes in the Spanish star's young professional path.

Alcaraz appeared to be advancing smoothly towards victory early on as he eased in the opening set. Yet, Norrie slowly battled back back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and pulling the Spaniard into prolonged, physical exchanges. His unceasing shot tolerance and reliability gradually left its mark.

Through most of the battle, Alcaraz served well but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old looked notably uneasy executing his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the game for a large part of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors. On the other side, Norrie offered his opponent so few mistakes, sustaining his reliability, fitness and penetration the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to force himself inside the baseline and play aggressively.

After battling for months due to a major left forearm injury and difficulties with his performance, Norrie slipped as far down as 91st globally this season.
