The co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will independently develop the controversial product within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.

Ongoing Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company

The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of support for Palestinians due to its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Recent Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Intentions

The founder stated how he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.

Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
