Everyday tennis enthusiasts are getting an opportunity to earn one million Australian dollars when they compete against elite players - headed by top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz - in a winner-takes-all point prior to the year's first major

Organizers of the Melbourne major have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will match 10 amateur players against top-ranked players in a elimination competition at the tournament grounds

The Unique Event Will Work

Players will play 'the classic hand game' to determine who gets to serve or return, and the competitor securing the point will move forward to the subsequent phase

The victor of the event will earn a significant cash prize

For comparison, players who reached the semi-finals of the men's or women's singles in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The US Open organized a restructured, separate mixed doubles tournament in late summer which encouraged top singles players to compete, with the champions receiving one million US dollars

The Melbourne tournament held its inaugural quick-fire event this year, but the cash prize was sixty thousand Australian dollars and it had limited exposure

One top competitor was the only top-10 player competing, and his run came to an end when he directed the single service opportunity granted into the net in his last eight match

Event Information

Organizers have not detailed exactly how the event will operate, but it is projected to follow a comparable structure to the most recent iteration

The elite players will be granted to make one service and the amateurs on two occasions - as is the norm in traditional tennis

While it is uncertain how the bracket will work, there will be several competitive phases and the location will be the primary court rather than the secondary venue

The final stages will be held in a night session instead of 1pm local time

Competitor Information

Domestic competitors - or overseas competitors who have signed up with the governing body - can participate in 'single-point competition' tournaments at their neighborhood facilities

The champions of the community events will then go into a random pairing, with an everyday competitor from every region and area picked to compete in the 'championship round' in a nighttime event on mid-January

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which non-professionals, aspiring competitors, well-known figures and athletic celebrities can enter

It commences on Monday, 12 January and the two winners will advance to the midweek 'championship match' with the remaining non-professionals and top-ranked athletes

"No matter your experience, the ultimate winner will receive the prize. Registrations will begin shortly at facilities throughout the nation"

Competition planners mentioned there were "more big names to be unveiled imminently", while the official website mentioned "famous personalities" would be taking part
